ドイツ生まれ。カールスルーエ国立美術学校で学び、1950年代はドイツ表現主義の影響を受けた鮮やかな色彩表現で制作。ドイツ青年画家展やパリ青年ビエンナーレなどで注目され、イタリア滞在を経て作風を発展させた。1966年にはベネチア・ビエンナーレでユネスコ賞を受賞し、その後は母校で教鞭をとりながら制作活動を続けた。
