48年山梨県生まれ。69年多摩美術大学油画科に入学。駒井哲郎から銅版画の指導を受ける。70年にシルクスクリーン作品が日本版画協会展新人賞受賞。71年から木版画の制作を始める。大型木版画のために開発した「凸凹摺り」により勢いのある線描と、さらに絵の具の濃淡やドリッピングなどのマチエールにより現代的な力強い表現が可能になった。76年に日本版画協会展最優秀賞、以降国内外で受賞を重ねる。そのモチーフとして描くものは素朴な木箱、椅子等から板や柱などで、それらが大きなエネルギーで亀裂、炸裂する様を描いたが凹凸刷りによる力強い刻線が動的画面を表すのにふさわしい技法であった。85年、文化庁芸術家在外研修員としてコロンビア大学大学院に留学。帰国後改めて日本人を意識した作風に大きく変化。画面をニワトリが横切って飛ぶ《The Flying》のシリーズを発表したが、飛翔するニワトリの背景に北斎の「浪」や「富士」などが使われるようになる。凹凸刷りによる力強い刻線によって日本そのものを象徴する「浪」や「富士」のイメージが際立ち現代の北斎と言うにふさわしく海外で評価の高い木版画作家の一人である。 Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1948, he entered the oil painting department of Tama Art University in 1969 and received instruction in copperplate printing from Tetsuro Komai. In 1970, his silkscreen prints won the Newcomer's Prize at the Exhibition of the Japan Print Association, and in 1971 he began working on woodblock prints. In 1976, he won the Grand Prize of the Japan Print Association Exhibition, and since then he has received many awards both in Japan and abroad. In 1985, he studied at the Graduate School of Columbia University as an overseas trainee artist from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. After returning to Japan, his style changed dramatically with a renewed awareness of the Japanese people. He produced the "The Flying" series, in which a chicken flies across the screen, and began to use Hokusai's "Nami" and "Fuji" in the background of the flying chicken.
