1951年第１回サンパウロ・ビエンナ－レで受賞。木版の棟方志功とともにいち早く世界の舞台で高い評価を獲得し戦後の美術界に鮮烈なデビューをします。銅版画の詩人と謳われ心にしみるエッチング作品を多数残し、56歳で亡くなるまで銅版画のパイオニアとして活躍する生涯でした。
