イリノイ州キワニー生まれ、シカゴに移り住みシカゴ美術館の学校で写実主義絵画を研究しました。卒業後ニューヨークに移り出版社、広告代理店などでグラフィックアーティストとして働きながら、60年代に自ら撮影した写真を忠実に再現する絵画形式を確立しました。同方向を目指す画家たちと共にフォトリアリズム（スーパーリアリズム）運動の創始者と見なされています。彼が描くものは、埃など一切無く隅々までクリーンで、日光が差し込み、ガラス窓に他のビルが反射し写り込んでいる建造物風景が多く、照明や時間帯により変化する反射光線など肉眼では捉えきれない細部を表現していて写真以上にリアリティがあります。彼の作品はメトロポリタン美術館など多くの美術館に収蔵されています。

Born in Kewanee, Illinois, he moved to Chicago to study realist painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduation, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a graphic artist for publishers and advertising agencies, and in the 1960s established a style of painting that faithfully reproduced photographs he had taken. He is regarded as the founder of the photorealism (super-realism) movement, along with other painters who were aiming in the same direction. His paintings are clean and free of dust, and often depict buildings with sunlight streaming in and reflections of other buildings in the glass windows. His works are in the collections of many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
